LO1 Task 4 Compare and Contrast Eastenders and Doctor Who
Task 4
Compare & Contrast - Eastenders and Doctor Who
Eastenders is a realist drama which has been on TV for many years also it uses a single camera in the production. It is a drama where it based on real life situations that people may go through. On the other hand, Doctor Who is an anti-realist drama which has a narrative of going into space, meeting aliens and time traveling.
Eastenders is based in East London and is a sequential drama, meaning that the drama is filmed in chronological order, making the drama flow. There are some aspects of Props Theory in Eastenders at times; this is because that there is a hero, villain and damsel in distress. However, it depends on what the storyline is about. The storyline of Eastenders is not consistent as it changes all the time. However, there will be one main story line that the narrative will be based on and the others will be substituted but as the characters clips change the story will change too. The drama, Eastenders, has both aspects of subjective and objective narrative. I know that it is subjective because the audience know what is happening during the episode. For example, the character 'Michael Moon' portrays to the audience what he is going through and how he is feeling in his situation. However Eastenders is objective too meaning that the audience does not know what is happening. Eastenders is a restricted drama where the audience can see what the character is going through and have sympathy for the character.
On the other hand, the drama 'Doctor who' is an anti-realist drama, meaning that the narrative, and everything that is involved in the drama, is fake. In each episode it consists of meeting aliens traveling through time and travelling in outer space. But in Doctor Who there are some aspects of Realism, such as the love story between Rory and Amy Pond. This drama involves the Props Theory as it has the involvement of a hero which is Doctor Who, a damsel in distress which is Oswin and villains which are the Darleks. Also to support The Props Theory, it also has Todorovs Theory meaning that everything is all well at the beginning, where Amy and Rory agreed to have divorce; living a normal life, and then it changes by the doctor becoming captured and taken by a prisoner by the Darleks. It is then resolved by the Doctor being the hero and fixing the problem. There characters are shown one at a time in order for the episode to link together. However, Doctor Who is a non-linear drama because it involves flashback. For example, at the beginning of this episode it shows that doctor who is defeated and then it flashes back to the main plot of the story and where it began. It is a restricted drama where the audience doesn't know what has happens next.
In conclusion both Easterners and Doctor Who have similarities such as both of them use a single camera to do all the production and both dramas consist of being restricted. However, the differences are that Eastenders is based around the realism and real life problem whereas doctor who is a Fictional narrative which is anti-realist.

LO1 Task 3 Genres
Task 3 - Genes
Genres
The definition of genres is a film or plot that has its own individual mood.
example of genres in a film or program is
a example of a period drama that i analysed is Merlin. by watching this as a viewer you can judge when this was set which is the past by the costume, lighting and other aspects.
The costume in the drama Merlin is old where the main characters are dressed as knight. this shows that this drama is based in the times where there was nights riding on horses. This portrays to the audience that if its a knights storyline they will have to adapt what the knights cultures was which is believing in dragons and there would be queens and kings ruling land.
In Merlin Every character in this period drama speak differently from the modern English for example the word "fool" the definition of that in the old English terms is known as a entertainer. also another example of old English being used in this period drama is when everyone address's the queen to "my lady" in the Knights time this is how they would show respect to the queen.
The drama doctor who, has anti realistic characters where there are darlek which are robots and props used such as the tardis where the doctor can travel through time. the costumes are normally costumes that are out of this world such as aliens and other unrealistic creatures.
In this sci-fi drama the location changes through out the every episodes however there are some that font change such as the Tardis and the house. But the location used can be out of this world past and future.

Comedy - Friends
Friends is a comedy where it has audience watching while the program is filming. firstly there would be a 180 degree rule where any of the for cameras cannot cross. this allows the studio to be used properly and allow the audience in the background to watch too.
The locations in this comedy is normally based in apartments and the cafe. If they are going out of those areas for example a driving scene a green screen is used. but mainly all the scenes that take place in friends are in a studio.
Lighting in a comedy is always a netrual colour not warm or cool it matches the scene. The lighting should be the same through out the scenes because it is shot in a studio and the lighting should be consistant at all times.
The props that are being used is what every normal person has in theirs apartments or home. such as a sofa, TV kettle and ETC. It portrays the main characters as they are living in a everyday living environment however in the Cafe there is other props which you will find in a regular coffee shop.

TASK 2
single camera & multi-camera
Single Camera Format
Single camera format is when One camera is being used through out the whole production of filming. Single camera is mainly used in documentaries, dramas and some times comedy. The reason why they use Single camera in there categories is because it enables the director to have more control of the camera and the director can spot the mistake quicker. The way that the single camera shots will be used is by having a numerous shot taken in one go for example shots 1, 3, 5, 7 will be taken in one angle followed by shots 2, 4, 6, 8, from a different angle. Then in the editing process the editor can cut and ripple the clips together which creates a scene. The way that the Director has more control of the camera is by ordering the filming crew when to stop and start shooting, if there is a mistake or the camera is in the wrong angle and then he can order where the camera should go.
advantage of single camera
The advantage of using a single camera is that the director can have a more established role on making the film look perfect. Also it is much more cheaper for the reason because you do not have to pay for expenditure such as more camera more filming crew members and other equipment. Single camera make consume time however the out come of it is to make every scene look perfect.
Multiple Camera Format
Multiple camera format is when a production crew is using more than one camera when filing. Multiple camera format is usually used it Live Television programs such as sporting events and reality TV shows. It is used in these specific categories because it live broadcasted on air and the cameras are being filmed continuously. The directors role it these events to be next to a mixer where it channels which camera to come online and start filing and to speak in a mic to command which camera to be online. Also when being edited the editor has the duty to pick the best shots that was taken and then will be joined together and be finalized in a disk.
Advantage of Multiple camera format.
The advantage of having a multiple camera format is that you are guaranteed to have a better chance to cover all the shots and it will be live. on the other hand it maybe costly however it is much more effective when shooting in live events.
